[Updated :: 2010-09-12 13:15:04 Hours]

The team representing Jaffna-based Sri Lanka Air Force was able to clinch the “CIMIC T-20 Challenge Trophy” by eight wickets at the T-20 tournament organized for the first time in Jaffna by the Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna (SF-J) in collaboration with Jaffna Cricket Association.

The final match held at the Jaffna Central College on 10th September was attended by a huge amount of cricket fans and distinguished guests including former Sri Lankan Captain and Hon Parliamentarian Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya who graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and Senior Officers of all three services employed under the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna.

22 teams including the Tri Services teams and Jaffna Spots Clubs took part in this tournament. Security Forces Headquarters Team, Air Force Team, the Navy Team with the Jaffna Cricket Team, the ‘Joniens’ were the teams managed to come over to the semifinals. The Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna Team was able to become the third whilst the Joniens Sports club became the runners up after being defeated by Air Force Team.

Prime aim of organizing this tournament was to introduce hardball cricket to younger generation in Jaffna who had been deprived of opportunity to engage in sport activities nearly for three decades due to LTTE movements in the North. It is also a part of Civil – Military Coordinating activities initiated by Commander Security Forces-Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe to strengthen the trust and friendship between Security Forces and Jaffna community.

SF-J by organizing these type of sports festivals expects to encourage Jaffna sports-loving youth and produce at least one cricketer to the Sri Lankan Cricket Team from Jaffna.

Brigadier General Staff SF-J, Brigadier BCJAF Rodrigo graced the occasion as Chief Guest while a large gathering of military personnel and civilians witnessed the match.

The winning team received their award from the Chief Guest while Hon Parliamentarian Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya and Senior Manager (Supply) of Airtel Lanka Mr. Lal Jayathilaka also joined in presentation of awards.
