mammoth project of growing 5000 coconut plants in Jaffna Security
Forces (SF-J) Headquarters area was launched on Thursday (23.09.2010)
with planting 300 coconut plants in a bare land in the close vicinity
to Headquarters SF-J at Palaly.
With view to backing the country’s economy and in support of government
Economy Development Programme for the North, Headquarters SF-J has
planned to cultivate 5000 coconut plants within camp premises and
state lands in Jaffna.
The project started when Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe
planted the first coconut plant at auspicious time Tuesday morning.
Quality plants were purchased from the Coconut Cultivation Board
(CCB). Land was cleared and pits were dug according to proper standards
by the Army personnel serving at the Headquarters SF-J which will
continue to maintain them throughout.
In the meantime, on directives of Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe,
Army formations in the peninsula are extending their assistance
to Palmyra Development Board (PDB) to expedite cultivation of more
and more Palmyra trees in Jaffna. Clear instructions have already
been passed to all Divisions, Brigades and Units to collect Palmyra
seeds from their areas and hand them over to the PDB nurseries until
the SF-J reaches the target of 400,000 seeds.
large acreage of Palmyra in the north was either abandoned or destroyed
due to war situation that prevailed for thirty years.
