Coconut to Harmonize Yarl Palmyra Economy
[Updated :: 2010-09-23 19:40:53 Hours]

A mammoth project of growing 5000 coconut plants in Jaffna Security Forces (SF-J) Headquarters area was launched on Thursday (23.09.2010) with planting 300 coconut plants in a bare land in the close vicinity to Headquarters SF-J at Palaly.

With view to backing the country’s economy and in support of government Economy Development Programme for the North, Headquarters SF-J has planned to cultivate 5000 coconut plants within camp premises and state lands in Jaffna.

The project started when Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe planted the first coconut plant at auspicious time Tuesday morning.

Quality plants were purchased from the Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB). Land was cleared and pits were dug according to proper standards by the Army personnel serving at the Headquarters SF-J which will continue to maintain them throughout.

In the meantime, on directives of Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Army formations in the peninsula are extending their assistance to Palmyra Development Board (PDB) to expedite cultivation of more and more Palmyra trees in Jaffna. Clear instructions have already been passed to all Divisions, Brigades and Units to collect Palmyra seeds from their areas and hand them over to the PDB nurseries until the SF-J reaches the target of 400,000 seeds.

A large acreage of Palmyra in the north was either abandoned or destroyed due to war situation that prevailed for thirty years.
