Disturbances to Education in certain parts of the peninsula which
had been held back for years due to LTTE activities is being rectified
once again by the government under the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Wadakkai
Wasantham) Northern development programme providing more and more
facilities to schools and students in Jaffna.
At the same time, Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna (SF-J),
which has undertaken a number of projects to promote the standard
of education in Jaffna by way of awarding scholarships and donating
school items to children, released the Vasavilan Central College
at Kadduwan in the Palaly High Security Zone to Education Department
on Tuesday (28.09.2010). The school may commence giving its formal
education as soon as shifting of necessary equipment and teaching
aid is completed.
The school was once used by the LTTE to direct attacks on the Security
Forces and it was a grave need for the Army to eliminate that threat
since it located within the presence of the Palaly Headquarters.
Since then the school remained abandoned due to threat of LTTE land
mines. Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe addressing
the gathering of distinguished guests, school children, teachers
and parents revealed that due to accelerated de-mining process within
the school premises, Security Forces were able to hand over the
school for the use of thousands of children from neighbouring areas.
Amidst the applause of the all present, he further added that Headquarters
SF-J will completely renovate one building in dilapidating condition
at SF-J’s expense as a token of goodwill. Commander SF-J assured
all assistance to uplift education of students in future including
making a playground for students for their sports activities.
Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Mr.
Douglas Devananda who was the Chief Guest of the occasion, Governor
Northern Province Maj. Gen. (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri and District
Secretary Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar distributed some books among
students and teachers and furniture to the school.
