Service Corps Crowned as SF-J Sports Champions

Final events and award ceremony of the athletic meet organized by
the Headquarters Security Forces-Jaffna (SF-J) got underway at the
SF-J playground at Palaly on Tuesday (26.10.2010) evening.
of the meet saw the 5th Battalion Sri Lanka Army Service Corps claim
the Champions’ Trophy while 7th Sri Lanka Armoured Corps and 3rd
Sri Lanka Signals Corps won the second and third places respectively.
competitions of some track and field events were conducted in different
locations in Jaffna for competitors from all Brigades and Divisions.
Finals started on 24th October at Palaly and were held for three
days with participation of players qualified in preliminaries.
twenty track and field sports were among the events that SF-J soldiers
took part in. Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe
attending the sports meet as Chief Guest gave away prizes and certificates
to winners. A march past and a band display were presented by the
troops at the end of the meet.
W.G.J.R. Karunathilake of 5th Sri Lanka Army Service Corps was adjudged
the best male athlete and Private M.R. Anuradha of 4th Sri Lanka
Corps of Military Police received the award for the best female
athlete of the year.
school players had been invited by the organizing committee highlighting
the theme “Unity through Sports” where they presented a few exhibition
relay runs. Defeating other schools, boys and girls of Alaveddi
Arunothya College received prizes and certificates from Commander
SF-J as winners.
Special awards were presented to Regional Manager Bank of Ceylon
Jaffna Mr. K.E.D. Sumanasiri by the SF-J Commander for his generous
sponsorship extended to make the event a success, District Sports
Officer Ms S Rubasingham, other sports officers and all school players
who participated in the exhibition relay runs.
Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama, Brigadier
General Staff SF-J Brig. B.C.J.A.F. Rodrigo, senior officers of
SF-J and large number of other ranks were present.
sports meet which is an annual event of Jaffna was organized for
soldiers serving in Jaffna to exhibit their sports talents and to
take time off from routine duties to engage in recreation.
