Thousands Attend Jaffna Naga Vihara Katina Pooja

The annual Katina pooja of the historical Sri Naga Vihara in Jaffna was held on 18th and 19th November in grandeur performing a number of religious activities with patronage of Chief Incumbent Ven. Meegahajandure Gnanarathana Thero.

Security Forces-Jaffna (SF-J) on guidance of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe extended its fullest support in organizing all events that got underway since 18th evening.

Programme commenced with placing of the sacred casket (Karanduwa) on the elephant by the Commander SF-J before it walked along the streets in an elegant procession traditional drummers and dancers. Whole night Pirith chanting by Maha Sangha, which commenced around 9.00 p.m., was followed by the Katina Perehera which carried the Cheevara (robe) from shrine of the 51 Division to offer to the Maha Sangha on the following day morning.

513 Brigade and the 51 Division had arranged alms giving for thirty monks on the 19th at Kadurugoda Vihara and the Naga Vihara itself. A special Bodhi pooja on the 19th evening will mark the culmination of the Katina Pooja.

Security Forces members and people in Jaffna and pilgrims from the south attended the event.

In organizing this Jaffna’s most significant religious event of the year, 51 Division commanded by Maj. Gen. Janaka Walgama was assisted by Navy, Air Force and Jaffna Municipal Council.
