SL Army General Awarded with Gusi International Peace Prize 2010

Commander Security Forces-Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe was awarded the prestigious Gusi International Peace Award 2010 in a majestic ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila on 24th November 2010. Eighteen others from various countries who were selected out of thousands of nominees also received the Gusi International Peace Award during the same ceremony attended by a galaxy of distinguished guests from all over the world.

The award ceremony 2010 organized by the Gusi Foundation commenced after all laureates were guided to the main stage under the shade of their respective national flags carried by Philippine military officers. It was followed by a military parade which National and Gusi colours were marched in.

Presentation of awards took place after a few speeches of senior appointment holders of the Foundation including Gusi Ambassador Hon. Barry S. Gusi and his wife Dr. Evelyn Gusi. Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe during his speech after receiving his award, which is Asian equivalent to the Nobel Prize, mentioned that he accepts it with all humility on behalf of the Commander in Chief His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, both of whom created the right framework for the final victory against the most brutal terrorist group in the world which had heaped so much grief and destruction on the motherland. He also shared the pride of being Gusi Peace laureate with all military personnel who are assisting him to create communal harmony and to uplift the living standard through different kinds of welfare projects by Security Forces in Jaffna for Jaffna populace.

Family members of Maj. Gen. Hathuruisinghe, Chief Minister of the North Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayake, Sri Lanka Ambassador in the Philippines Mr. N. Bennet Cooray, senior Sri Lankan military officers, Sri Lankan expatriates in the Philippines and some diplomatic officials represented the country at the ceremony.

At the invitation of the organizing committee, dancing troupe from the North Central Province of Sri Lanka performed a traditional upcountry dance and entertained the international audience. Magnitude of the ceremony was enhanced with a few music and dancing events presented by performers from different countries.

The Gusi Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or groups worldwide who have distinguished themselves as brilliant exemplars of society or who contributed towards the attainment of Peace and respect for Human Life and Dignity. The Gusi Foundation conferred this esteemed award to Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe for his dedication to Humanitarian Assistance towards Jaffna people to uplift their living standard and for the contribution to establish Peace and Communal Harmony.

The Gusi Foundation has been presenting this Award since 2002 under the patronage of Hon. Barry S. Gusi in memory of his Late father Captain Gemeniano Javier Gusi, a World War II warrior who later committed himself to social services and to promote Human Rights with lavish backing of his beloved wife Madame Teodora Sotejo Gusi
