Safety Day Held in Jaffna

“Thousands of Jaffna citizens who gathered at the Weerasingham Hall
on Sunday (26.12.2010) remembered their loved ones, soldiers and
all others who perished in natural and man-made disasters. Hon.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne was the Chief Guest of the national
ceremony which commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag,
Provincial Flag, District Flag and the Disaster Management Flag.
It was followed by reciting of the National Anthem and two minute
silence in remembrance of disaster victims.

a tri services and Police march past in which Jaffna school bands,
scouts, girl guides and cultural teams presented their striking
performances. Several government and non governmental organizations
joined the parade with respective exhibiting vehicles.

The function included cultural performances and speeches by guest
the function, a book on Disaster Risk Reduction Development for
School Children was launched and its first copy was presented to
Hon Prime Minister by Government Agent (Jaffna). Awarding certificates
to winners of the provincial and inter-school essay and arts competition
organized parallel to the National Safety Day 2010 also took place
on the same occasion. Government Agencies which excelled in supporting
in disaster management were also awarded. In the meantime, a stock
of Life Saving Equipment was donated to the Jaffna- based Navy.
In addition, many donations were handed over to disaster-affected
people and school children during the function.

Industries and Small Enterprises Mr. Douglas Devananda, Ministers,
Governor of Northern Province Parliamentarians, Commander Security
Forces –Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Director General
Disaster Management Centre Major General (Retd) Gamini Hettiaarachchi
and a large gathering of senior officials were present.
