National Flags Fly in Jaffna on 63rd Independence Day

People in Jaffna had National Flags hoisted at their houses, business places and government buildings and even on vehicles today (04.02.2011) celebrating the historical day that Sri Lanka gained Independence exactly 63 years ago from the British crown.

All government offices in Jaffna this morning held special functions with participation of Heads of the institutes and their staff members to mark the 63rd Independence Day. Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, the Government Agent Jaffna along with her staff hoisted the National Flag at the office and sang the National Anthem to mark the Independence Day. General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama attended the function as a special guest.

Meanwhile, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) with his Staff Officers, Other Ranks and members of the civilian staff attended Independence celebrations held at the Headquarters SF-J in Friday morning. All ranks who stood attention in front of the Headquarters main building sang the National Anthem soon after Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe hoisted the National Flag. Later, a mango sapling was planted by the SF-J Commander in the Headquarters premises.

51 Division, on Friday, had organized a blood donation campaign in memory of all war heroes who made supreme sacrifice in the war against terrorism and national heroes who fought to gain independence to the motherland. With guidance of Commander 513 Brigade Brigadier Pradeep de Silva, 513 Civil Affairs office organized the blood donation camp at Mc Liyod private hospital in Marathanamadam. One hundred soldiers from 511, 512 and 513 Brigades donated blood to the blood bank of Jaffna Teaching Hospital. 513 Brigade has planned to have a volleyball tournament for the sports clubs in the Brigade area on Saturday at Ramanathan College playground.

The same day, Jaffna prison released thirteen inmates who were serving imprisonment for minor offences. Three women and ten males were among them.
