Promoting educational facilities for Jaffna children and expanding
opportunities of vocational training for school leavers, two new
two-storied buildings constructed by the government under the Uthuru
Wasanthaya development programme for the North were declared open
by Hon. Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapaksa Friday
(25.02.2011) morning at Vembady Girls’ High School and Jaffna Advanced
new classroom and workshop complex built at the Technical College
with Korean government’s aid had cost the government approximately
US $ 2.5 million and Hon. Minister revealed that it provides more
facilities for Jaffna engineering students than those who are at
Katubedda in Colombo. Mr. Basil Rajapaksa further mentioned it is
a fulfillment of terms pledged in the Mahnda Chinthana in skill
development of youths in north and south.
another new two storied building with a computer laboratory, a library
and an auditorium was declared open at the Vembady Girl’s High School.
Funds for the building were given from allocations for Uthuru Wasanthaya.
the meantime, four tractors were handed over to Jaffna Palmyra Development
Board for its development work being carried within the peninsula
in the field of Palmyra cultivation, research and Palmyra production
also declared open the NIBM (National Institute of Business Management)
branch in Jaffna enabling enthusiastic youths to continue higher
education in Business Management field. The institute offers Diploma
and encourages its students to obtain degrees.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Skill Development Mr. Dullas Alahapperuma,
Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development
Mr. Douglasss Devananda, Governor Northern Province Major General
(Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Commander Security Forces-Jaffna Major
General Mahinda Hathurusingha, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda
Sukumar and a large crowd of people including senior government
officials also attended today’s functions.
