Army Donates Cows to Jaffna Milk Farmers on Maha Shiva Rathri Day

Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe stated that Army has been able to get the support of donor organizations and individuals from the south in the Army’s effort to improve living standard of needy families in Jaffna. Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe expressed these ideas on Wednesday (02.03.2011) attending another CIMIC (Civil Military Coordination) project to hand over cows to poor milk farmers in the peninsula.

Jaffna-based Army troops by now have launched many civic-oriented welfare projects to assist destitute families by way of constructing houses, offering scholarships and giving various types of donations.

During Wednesday’s function organized by Jaffna Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office to coincide the Maha Shiva Rathri Hindu festival, twenty two cows were handed over to Jaffna milk farmers who were given special training on cattle rearing and Animal Husbandry at Seeppukulama Government Agriculture Training Centre by Civil Affairs Office.

Speaking a few words in Tamil language for the crowd present on the occasion, SF-J Commander said that improvement of the economy of Jaffna people as a result of these activities is his only hope.

Sixteen cows were donated by the Army Farm Palaly while six others were donated by Maliban Milk Company.

Commander gave scholarships to five poor students sponsored by Ven. Morawaka Soratha Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbant Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist meditation centre in Nicosia, Cypress.

Fifty more students received parcels of exercise books and boxes of Mathematical equipment from the Jaffna Commander and Senior Army Officers on the same occasion.

Sarvodaya Project Director Dr. L. Chandradasa and a leading Businesswomen Mrs. Vasundara also sponsored donations.

Religious leaders, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe, General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Sudath Perera, Mayoress Jaffna Mrs. Y. PAthgunarasa, Assistant Director Department of Animal Product and Health Jaffna Mrs. V. AMirthalingam, Mr. V. Opathaella, Mr. A. Shanmugaraj and Mr. Jagath Weeraddana of Maliban Milk Products were among those present.
