51 Division Headquarters Vacates Subash Hotel & Relocated in Kopay
[Updated :: 2011-03-04 16:50:10 Hours]

The Headquarters of 51 Division of the Sri Lanka Army which had been functional at the Subash Hotel in Jaffna town for sixteen years commenced its duties at a new location in Kopay since Friday (04.03.2011).

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya accompanied by a host of senior Army officers including Commander Security Forces – Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama declared open the new Headquarters complex unveiling the plaque. On arrival in the location Sri Lanka Armoured Corps accorded a Guard of Honour to the Army Commander, the Chief Guest of the event.

The 51 Division was established in Jaffna on 2nd December 1995 making the Subash Hotel its command base after the Sri Lankan Army troops liberated Jaffna town from the terrorists in Operation Riviresa 1 launched on 17th October 1995. Since the inception, this Division played a pivotal role in conducting military operations against terrorists until the end of the Humanitarian Operations in May 2009.

With peace ushered to the island at the defeat of terrorism, 51 Division, on directives of Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna, has now been immensely contributing to the government’s Jaffna development mechanism.

In the meantime, on decision of the Ministry of Defence to reduce High Security Zones in Jaffna resettling civilians in their own places, Security Forces – Jaffna is now in the process of leaving civilians’ residences and buildings occupied by the troops moving military formations to crown lands. Shifting the Headquarters 51 Division is another phase of it. A few months ago Army vacated the Gnanam Hotel in the Jaffna town and allowed people to use the Clock Tower road close the Subash Hotel. A part of the Hotel was given back to its owner Mr. S. Hariharan a few weeks ago by the Army. In the same way, arrangements are already being made to hand over the rest of the Subash Hotel consisting of over 30 rooms to its owner in near future.

The new Headquarters complex is a creation of the 5th Engineer Service Regiment. Contribution of the Regiment of 1Field Sri Lanka Engineers and troops from other Units helped expedite the construction work in the site.
