Jaffna Products Earn Big Demand at Army Seva Vanitha New Year Fair at Panagoda

Stalls selling Jaffna traditional handicrafts, Jaffna vegetables, Jaffna food products and Jaffna fish which were put up by the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna (SF-J) at Panagoda “Rana Aruna Udanaya” New Year Fair 2011 drew large crowds when the fair was opened by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Saturday (09).

Male and female SF-J soldiers, attired in traditional Jaffna dress, were seen busy selling sweetmeats, food items, grape wine, Jaffna cordial and handicrafts and household items made out of Palmyra to Security Forces members and civilians, who flocked at the Panagoda Army School grounds, where the New Year fair organized by the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) under the auspices of its President Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya was held.

A separate stall had been opened to sell Jaffna special foods such as ulundu wade, thal hakuru (Jaggery), kottakilangu and so on. Many people visiting the fair took a special interest in tasting Jaffna ulundu wade instantly prepared and served hot. All SF-J stalls decorated with Palmyra leaves and colourful traditional Hindu designs impressed customers walking about the premises.

Over 8000 kg of various kinds of upcountry and low-country vegetables cultivated in Jaffna were sold at half the rate of normal market price on 9th and 10th. Most of them were grown by Jaffna soldiers in the SF-J farm at Palaly while the remaining quantity was purchased from farmers in remote areas in Jaffna. Two lorry loads of fresh fish from Valvettithurai and stocks of quality dried fish from Point Pedro were among the best selling items at the fair. Mr. Gunawardane, a government teacher was thankful to the Army for making arrangements for people to buy essentials at extremely cheaper prices during the New Year season.

Special attention of ladies was drawn to Jaffna handicrafts and Palmyra products section. Ms. Deepika Samaraweera of Homagama said that it was amazing to see such skilled creations at such an unbelievable price.

Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, President SVAB Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya and other senior officers were welcomed to Jaffna section of the fair by Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

“Rana Aruna Udanaya” New Year Fair 2011 is another welfare project of the SVAB to raise funds for the betterment War Heroes.
