Thousands of People Enjoy Army-Organized New Year Festival

After more than three decades, people in Point Pedro, Alvai, Valvettithurai and surrounding areas enjoyed the ecstasy of Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations organized by the Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) in their own area.

Celebrations which commenced on 14th morning with New Year rituals culminated on 15th night with a grand musical fiesta held at the Point Pedro Hartley College at which popular local and Indian artistes entertained their fans with melodies.

Thousands of civilians along with soldiers serving in the area took part in a range of sports events organized with sponsorship of Independence Television Network (ITN) at Velvy Pilliar Kovil at Valvettithurai. Boat races were also among the events that showed maximum participation.

Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe attended main rituals observed at auspicious times at Valvettithurai on the 14th. Ceremony on the following day was graced by Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar and a host of distinguished guests.

Winners and participants were awarded with valuable prizes at the end of competitions.
