People Enjoy Chava New Year Festival

A New Year festival to mark the most significant annual cultural festival common to both Hindus and Buddhists was organized by the 523 Brigade in association with Chavakachcheri Trade Association at Chavakachcheri town on 24th April.

A large numbers of civilians took part in a number of sports and events. Special events had been organized for elderly people, women and children. Viewing cajans, scraping coconuts, bicycle races, climbing greasy pole, cross country and various other traditional sports attracted a large crowd of participants.

Valuable prizes were given away to winners by the General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe and other invitees.

Officers and other ranks of the 523 Brigade had arranged a New Year tea table full of sweetmeats specially made during the festival season for all who were present.

Senior officers of the Army and government and private establishments in the area were present on the occasion.
