Gnanam Hotel Open for Guests after 24 Years
[Updated :: 2011-05-02 19:56:01 Hours]

The famous Gnanam Hotel on the Clock Tower road in the middle of Jaffna city recommenced its service for guests Sunday (01.05.2011) at auspicious time with attendance of some invitees.

The hotel which was fully renovated and modified to cater the needs of guests is ready to provide many facilities to its customers in addition to food and lodging. According to the new management, the hotel has 30 comfortable rooms including some family rooms with quick access to working staff through intercom system and internet facilities. In their latest business venture, Gnanam Hotel will soon arrange tour guide assistance with required transport for its guests to places of tourist interest in the peninsula.

Terrorist activities in Jaffna compelled the former management of the hotel to close it down along with many other business firms in the city. After defeating terrorist movements in the city, it was taken over by the Sri Lanka Army in 1995 on rent basis and the Army paid Rs. 40000/= per month to its owner. Later, the area was declared a High Security Zone (HSZ).

Giving benefits of peace achieved by Sri Lankan Security Forces to civilians, the Clock Tower road on which the Gnanam Hotel was situated was released for public use in April 2010. Four months later, on directives of the Ministry of Defence, troops deployed in the hotel were withdrawn and the hotel was handed over to the owner. Army was doing necessary maintenance of all the buildings of the hotel until they vacated it.

Sunday’s reopening was attended by Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and some invited guests from Colombo and Jaffna.
