Hotel Open for Guests after 24 Years

The famous Gnanam Hotel on the Clock Tower road in the middle of
Jaffna city recommenced its service for guests Sunday (01.05.2011)
at auspicious time with attendance of some invitees.
hotel which was fully renovated and modified to cater the needs
of guests is ready to provide many facilities to its customers in
addition to food and lodging. According to the new management, the
hotel has 30 comfortable rooms including some family rooms with
quick access to working staff through intercom system and internet
facilities. In their latest business venture, Gnanam Hotel will
soon arrange tour guide assistance with required transport for its
guests to places of tourist interest in the peninsula.
Terrorist activities in Jaffna compelled the former management of
the hotel to close it down along with many other business firms
in the city. After defeating terrorist movements in the city, it
was taken over by the Sri Lanka Army in 1995 on rent basis and the
Army paid Rs. 40000/= per month to its owner. Later, the area was
declared a High Security Zone (HSZ).

the Clock Tower road on which the Gnanam Hotel was situated was
released for public use in April 2010. Four months later, on directives
of the Ministry of Defence, troops deployed in the hotel were withdrawn
and the hotel was handed over to the owner. Army was doing necessary
maintenance of all the buildings of the hotel until they vacated
reopening was attended by Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J)
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and some invited guests from
Colombo and Jaffna.
