[Updated :: 2011-05-09 18:55:12 Hours]

Under the government’s resettlement project for northern civilians displaced due to the war, areas covering nine Gramaniladhari Divisions in Valikamam North were handed over to the public by the Sri Lanka Army today (09.05.2011) during a ceremony held at famous Mavadipuram Kandaswami Temple.

According to Thelippalai Divisional Secretariat, nearly 12274 civilians of 3511 families will be resettled in their original homesteads after 21 years of their displacement. Gramaniladhari Divisions of J/226 Naguleshwaram, J/228 Thelippalai, J/230 Thanthaiselvapuram, J /231 Mavadipuram, J/239 Kadduwan West, J/232 Mavadipuram South and a part of J/236 Palai Vemankamam North and J/237 Palai Vemankamam South coming under the administration of Thelippalai Divisional Secretariat were released today. Meanwhile, the remaining areas of J/225 Kolankallady were also handed over to the Government Agent by the Army. Several villages of it were released a few weeks ago. GA’s office has already completed the registration procedures in ascertaining the ownership of the lands.

Addressing the large gathering of civilians, Hon. Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, who graced the ceremony as Chief Guest, said that there are some international elements acting with connivance of some Tamil politicians to tarnish the image of the country. He further said that their hidden agenda prolonged the resettlement process but they continue to enjoy all the perks being agents of evil forces. Further, Minister said that lands held by the Security Forces will be handed back to people with direction of His Excellency the President. Similarly, lands held by the Army was released today.

“I came to Jaffna with a special message from His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The President says that he would give everything to you except the lives lost. So you will be given everything by the government to live a peaceful life in your original places,” Minister Basil ststed.

These areas situated on the Jaffna-KKS (Kankesanthurai) main road and Mavadipuram-Keeramalai road earlier remained within the KKS High Security Zone (HSZ) and had heavily been mined by the terrorists during their presence in Mavadipuram and Thelippalai areas. Removal of mines and UXOs in the Mavadipuram area was expedited last year on instructions of Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe under aegis the Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to accelerate the resettlement process.

“Beggars never want to see their wound be healed because they live on it. In the same way, such elements spend dollars to disturb peace in the country for their survival,” Minister said. He requested all present to be united against anti Sri Lankan elements and preserve peace gained through sacrifices of war heroes and ordinary people of this country.

Earlier, the areas around Thelippalai cancer hospital and the Thelippalai Union College located within the HSZ were de-mined and made accessible to civilians by the Army many months ago on humanitarian grounds. With shrinking of the HSZ since Monday, the public will be free to reach many places such as Naguleshwaram and Mavadipuram temples, Keeramalai Ponds, Raja Rajeshwari Kovil, Kolankallady Kovil and many other areas.

Hindu priests, Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Mr. Douglas Devananda, Governor Northern Province Maj. Gen. (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, TNA (Tamil National Alliance) Parliamentarians for Jaffna District, Commander SF-J Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Maj. Gen. Janaka Walgama, Divisional Secretary Thelippalai Mr. S.
