Jaffna Commander Briefs UN Delegation on Progress of De-mining

A special UN delegation, with view to getting an update of humanitarian de-mining in Jaffna, met Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe at his office in Palaly Tuesday (10.05.2011).

During the meeting, Commander SF-J enlightened Ms. Indumathi Mohandas, Head of the field office UNHCR Jaffna, Mr. Alfred Mutiti, Child Protection Specialist and Mr. Damascus Machery, Area Security Coordinator of the UN office about the progress of de-mining activities in the peninsula. The delegation expressed their satisfaction with regard to resettlement in Jaffna, especially they thanked the Army for their effort taken to hand over the areas held by the Army after speedy de-mining for resettlement.

The delegation appreciated the reduction of child related crimes and abuses in Jaffna and thanked the Army for the assistance given in this regard. They were also educated about the Army’s involvement in the government’s development projects in Jaffna.
