[Updated :: 2011-05-15 07:40:20 Hours]

A special Pooja to invoke blessing on Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and the troops serving in Jaffna was held at Sri Valli Thevasena Sametha Siva Subramanya Swamy Thevasthanam (Sri Murugan Temple) Chankanai on Saturday (14.05.2011) morning with participation of a large crowd of Army personnel and civilians.

Conducting Maha Mruthyunchaya Homam, Rev. N. Sugan Sarma Kurukkal, the head priest of the temple prayed Lord Shiva to give strength, dynamism and long life to the SF-J Commander and all soldiers serving in the peninsula to serve more and more to Jaffna and its people.

Before attending the rituals conducted amidst the sound of Merlam (drum), Nagaswaram (trumpet) and Gantamany (bell), Commander SF-J and others paid floral tribute to the newly erected statue of former head priest Late Sri Siva Nithyananda Kurukkal who sacrificed his life at the hands of ex-LTTE terrorists last December.

This sacred Murugan temple which is situated in a land encircled by rich Palmyra grove in a remote village claims a long history of service to pious Hindus in Manipay area. The annual Pooja “Brahmmothsawam 2011” of the temple will be held after two days.

Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe planted a coconut plant at the Temple premises to mark the occasion.

General Officer Commanding 51 Division Maj. Gen. Janaka Walgama and senior Army Officers of the SF-J joined the devotees in this grand religious ceremony.
