Tamil & Muslim Undergrads Help Sinhalese Students to Organize Vesak Celebration
[Updated :: 2011-05-18 17:40:15 Hours]

Students of University of Jaffna setting example to others collectively organized a Vesak festival on the 17th May. They decorated the Ramanathan road close to the University with Vesak lanterns and put up a Dansala. It was impressive to witness the students belonging to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities together waving flags to stop all vehicles and pedestrians passing the University premises and offer them with soft drinks. The area was illuminated with coconut oil lamps in the evening. Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University Ms. Vasanthi Arsarathnam lit the first lamp while others of the academic staff and the students followed.

Marking the 2600 Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi, and with long years of non-activity, the first year students of the Jaffna University started a Buddhist Students Association with blessings of University administration and the support of senior students. Some appointments of the University Studentsí Buddhist Association were willingly taken over by Tamil and Muslim students.
