[Updated :: 2011-06-16 11:20:40 Hours]

The island of Naga or Nagadeepa (Nainathivu) which became sacred with the arrival of Lord Buddha glittered with Poson illuminations on the full moon day (15) exclusively created to celebrate the arrival of Arhath Mahinda centuries ago and the 2600 Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi.

With auspices of the Chief Incumbent of Nagadeepa Temple and Sangha Nayaka of the Northern Province Ven. Navadagala Padumakitti Tissa Thero, Northern Command Sri Lanka Navy made all arrangements to erect an attractive pandol at the temple site giving a novel experience to many islanders.

“This is the first time that such a religious programme was organized in this historical island. This pandol depicting the Sama Jathakaya was made especially for the people of the islands,” Ven. Anuradhapura Ariyakitthi Thissa Thero of the temple said.

Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and the Commander Northern Naval Command Rear Admiral Ravi Wijegunratne inaugurated the celebrations switching on lights of the pandol at auspicious time.

Coinciding with the main celebrations, sailors organized a Dansala and distributed lunch packets and boiled gram to all who were present.

The most interesting event was that people of the island organized a separate Danasla where all pilgrims were offered biscuits with soft drinks.

“People of the Nagadeepa irrespective of racial and religious differences gave their fullest support in organizing the festival,” Ven. Anuradhapura Ariyakitthi Thissa Thero commented.

Commander SF-J, during his address at the opening of the ceremony appreciated Ven. Navadagala Padumakitti Tissa Thero for his dedication to protect this invaluable sacred land of Buddhists. Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe thanked the Commander Northern Naval Command and all sailors of the Northern Base for their support extended to arrange this year’s festival.

Priests of Hindu and Islam faith, Divisional Secretary of Velanai Mr. Nandagopal, a large number of Army, Navy and Police personnel and civilians had gathered to watch the pandol and other decorations which will end on the 18th.

A special boat service has been arranged from the Nagadeepa island by the Navy till midnight for the convenience of pilgrims during the celebrations.
