[Updated :: 2011-06-20 15:30:50 Hours]

Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SF-J) on 19th June 2011 completed its 15th year of national service as the prime military installation in the Jaffna peninsula.

With auspices of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, a range of activities including multi-religious observances had been organized by officers, other ranks and the members of civilian staff serving at SF-J to celebrate the 15th anniversary for three days.

Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna, as it was re-designated on 19.06.1996 played a vital role to defeat terrorism that engulfed the whole of the north and east for thirty years.

Religious ceremonies to bless the SF-J flag commenced on the 17th June. A special Bodhi Pooja was held at the SF-J sacred Bo Maluwa and Hindu religious rites were conducted at historical Mavadipuram Hindu Temple. Flag blessing continued on the 18th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Atchuveli and Jaffna Jumma mosque.

On the 19th morning, SF-J Commander and other senior officers placed flower bouquets at the foot of Palaly War Hero Monument in remembrance of soldiers who paid supreme sacrifice for the sake of country’s sovereignty while serving under the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna. Remembrance of War Heroes was followed by a guard of honour accorded to the SF-J Commander by the 6th Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery.

Later, Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe accompanied by members of medical and nursing staff of the Palaly Army Base Hospital visited officers and other ranks receiving medical treatment at hospital. Having inquired about their health, Commander SF-J gave each patient a gift parcel and wished them fast recovery.

As a part of the programme, all officers and other ranks of the Headquarters SF-J met at the all ranks lunch where Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe extended his sincere gratitude to parents, children, husbands and wives of officers, other ranks and members of civilian staff serving in Jaffna for their encouragement given to beloved war heroes and ran domestic affairs in the absence of their next of kin.

A grand musical show held on the 19th evening at the Headquarters premises marked the culmination of anniversary celebrations. Popular vocalists such as Damitha Abeyratne, Tony Hassan, Priyankara Perera, Priyantha Fernando, Susil Fernando, Saman de Silva and Sameera Hassan and Army dancing troupe presented their performances with the Army band for the entertainment of Jaffna soldiers.

Jaffna Vicar General Rev. Fr. Dr. Justin Gnanapragasam, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar and some senior citizens of Jaffna also attended the function as invited distinguished guests.
