Reconstruction of KKS Harbour Commences
[Updated :: 2011-07-28 10:30:05 Hours]

Setting an important landmark of northern development under the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Wadakkin Wasantham), reconstruction of the Kankesanthurai (KKS) harbour commenced on Tuesday (19).

At the initial stage, removal of wreckages of sunken vessels that block safe entrance to the harbour will take place. The contract of removing wreckages has been undertaken by the US-based RESOLVE Marine Group and the Sri Lankan government is carrying out the reconstruction project with financial assistance of the Indian government.

Hon. Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapaksa attending the inauguration ceremony as Chief Guest said that the KKS harbour, on completion of its reconstruction work will serve commercial purposes while acting as the hub of six more small harbours to come up in the north in future.

During the past few years, the KKS harbour faced a few attacks of terrorists between 1994 and 1996 which sunk six vessels and caused damages to peripheral constructions. Those attacks crippled transportation of goods and passengers from the south and east to the north dragging civiliansí life in the north to many difficulties.

Hon Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Mr. Douglas Devananda, Indian High Commissioner Mr. Ashok K. Kanth, Governor Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, President RESOLVE Marine Group Mr. Joe Farrell Jr. and a large crowd including Parliamentarians, Army and Navy senior officers were also attended the function.
