of KKS Harbour Commences

Setting an important landmark of northern development under the
Uthuru Wasanthaya (Wadakkin
Wasantham), reconstruction of the Kankesanthurai (KKS) harbour
commenced on Tuesday (19).
the initial stage, removal of wreckages of sunken vessels that block
safe entrance to the harbour will take place. The contract of removing
wreckages has been undertaken by the US-based RESOLVE Marine Group
and the Sri Lankan government is carrying out the reconstruction
project with financial assistance of the Indian government.
Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapaksa attending the
inauguration ceremony as Chief Guest said that the KKS harbour,
on completion of its reconstruction work will serve commercial purposes
while acting as the hub of six more small harbours to come up in
the north in future.
the past few years, the KKS harbour faced a few attacks of terrorists
between 1994 and 1996 which sunk six vessels and caused damages
to peripheral constructions. Those attacks crippled transportation
of goods and passengers from the south and east to the north dragging
civiliansí life in the north to many difficulties.
Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Mr. Douglas
Devananda, Indian High Commissioner Mr. Ashok K. Kanth, Governor
Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Government
Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, President RESOLVE Marine Group
Mr. Joe Farrell Jr. and a large crowd including Parliamentarians,
Army and Navy senior officers were also attended the function.
