Water Cutting Ceremony Marks the Culmination of Nallur Annual Festival
[Updated :: 2011-08-30 19:13:03 Hours]

Annual festival of the famous Nallur Kanthaswami Temple in Jaffna culminated on Sunday (27) morning with water cutting ceremony. It was preceded by the cart (Ther) festival on Saturday (28) which was attended by many thousands of devotees of Hindu and other religious beliefs.

This year’s festival showed a significant increase of participation of people from various parts of the island as well as from other countries. The temple site was flooded with people whose continuous devotional cry “Aro hara” reverberated the air around the temple. A rain of flowers was dropped from a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter as the sacred cart was drawn around the temple.

Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SF-J) had arranged many facilities such as medical and water etc. for the convenience of people arriving in the temple while assisting the police to provide security to people and the area. On the 24th SF –J Headquarters organized a big Dansela at which nearly ten thousands devotees were given free meals.

Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe attended a special pooja on the day prior to the water cutting ceremony while Colonel Ramesh Shanmuganathan of the SF-J took part in the Ther festival.

Annual festival of the temple started on the 4th of August.
