Steering Committee Appointed to Ensure Coordination of Security Apparatus in Jaffna

A special meeting was held at the Jaffna District Secretariat on Tuesday (06) consequent to a series of unusual activities occurred at a few places in the peninsula creating a sense of insecurity among the people. Prime objective of the meeting attended by religious leaders, Ministers, Parliamentarians, high-ranking Administrative, Military, government officials and representatives of the general public was to eradicate fear psychosis of the people about so-called Grease Devil and ensure security of the people in Jaffna through a coordinated security mechanism.

Hon Minister of Petroleum Industries Mr. Susil Premajayantha who attended the meeting as the special envoy of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa informed that a Steering Committee will be appointed with the Governor as the Head to ensure proper coordination of the mechanism. The committee will consist of religious leaders, Parliamentarians, Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J), Senior DIG Jaffna and community leaders. The development committees presently in effect will be reintegrated to the system to make it more effective at Brigade and Battalion level.

Addressing the forum which was open for general comments by the people’s representatives, a Jaffna woman activist Ms Saroja Sivasankar said that relations between Security Forces and people have declined due to these recent activities of some monstrous elements and requested to bring them before the law and restore normalcy. Jaffna University lecturers representing intellectuals were in the opinion that some unidentified elements seem to be attempting to disrupt the rapport between Security Forces and the civilians in post-conflict Jaffna.

Speaking at the meeting Nallur Adinan Srilasri Somasundarampillai Kurukkal said that culprits behind those heinous acts should be dealt severely and brought before the law. Bishop Jaffna Rev. Fr. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam agreed that those happenings have affected good relations between Security Forces, Police and civilians. Rev. Fr. Dr. Saundranayagam highlighted the necessity of building that relationship soon. Ven. Meegahajandure Sirivimala Thero of Naga Vihara speaking his ideas stated that various political hands and social sections with western influence should not be allowed to disturb peace gained after thirty years.

Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe during his address brought the security measures that have been taken by the Security Forces and Police to the notice of all present. He stressed that so-called Grease Devil is a fantasy created by some sections in the society to disturb peace being enjoyed by the people. He totally rejected rumours being spread against the Security Forces and requested not be carried away by unscrupulous stories without any substance. SF-J Commander told the participants that Police are ready to accept any complaint even against the Army if they do anything wrong. Finally, SF-J Commander requested all participants to corporate with the Police to maintain law and order without attempting to take the law into their hands following misleading instructions of interested parties with ulterior motives.

Bishop of Indian Catholic Church Rev Fr. Dr. Thiyagaraja, Governor Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Mr. Douglas Devananda, Additional Government Agent Ms. Varthani Rupasingham, Senior DIG Mr. Gamini Silva General Officers Commanding of three Divisions were also present.
