Success of Future Leaders Rewarded by the Army

Fifty four students who performed well at the Grade 5 scholarship examination 2011 had a memorable day when their achievement was rewarded during a grand ceremony organized at the Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office in Jaffna on Sunday (02) morning.

The ceremony was organized by the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna (SF-J) on directives of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe with view to appreciating and encouraging those future leaders of the country.

During the ceremony organized in high profile note with participation of a number of dignitaries in the district, 54 Grade 5 students who obtained marks over 181 received monetary donations and school items as gifts from the Jaffna Commander.

Each student was presented a parcel of 50 exercise books and one school bag. Special awards were given to the first ten in order of merit. R. Nithusika of J/St. John’s Bosco College who scored 192 at the examination received a pass book with deposit of Rs. 10,000/= at the Bank of Ceylon while L. Thilojan of J/Jaffna Hindu Primary College and K. Kavina of J/Meesalai Weerasingham Maha Vidyalaya who scored equal marks of 191 were respectively offered Rs. 7500/= and Rs. 6000/=. The next seven in the line were given Rs. 5000/= each.

Meanwhile, S. Vickneswaran, E. Christilda, V. Vijalathan and V. Vijayaluxmy of the Nufield’s School for Deaf and Blind at Kaithady who excelled at the G.C.E. O/L Examination 2010 were gifted with Rs. 25000/= each during the similar function. Leading philanthropist and Engineer Mr. S. Kirubananthan, proprietor of Seagull Property Development Pvt. Ltd. Colombo sponsored the donation of Rs. 100,000/= to those four blind students.

Addressing the gathering of students, teachers, parents and other distinguished guests, Commander SF-J expressed his extreme pleasure for being able to spend the day with children at this grand ceremony organized coinciding with the International Children’s Day. He requested all kids present on the occasion to grow up with the spirit of love and peace.

“Keep in mind the words of famous Indian poet Subramaniyam Bharathi. He said “Love the community but live together as one nation”. We can learn a lot from our past scholars. Please practice the teaching of “Thirukkural” authored by great poet and scholar Thiruvalluvar. It stresses the importance of inculcating peace and harmony through equality and cooperation,” Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe added wishing a bright future to all Jaffna children.

Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar thanked the Commander SF-J and soldiers serving in Jaffna for their dedication shown towards accelerated de-mining, early resettlement and creating a peaceful environment in Jaffna which promoted the standard of education in Jaffna.

Jaffna Mayoress Mrs. Yogeshwari Pathgunarasa, Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Education of Northern Province Mr. V.T. Selvarathnam and Senior Jaffna citizen Mr. Ishwara Sarma also addressed the gathering.

At the same time, special mementoes were presented by Jaffna Commander to Prof. G. Mikunthan, Head of Departmet of Agricultural Biology, Faculty of Agriculture of Jaffna University, Dr. Mrs. Sivachanthiran, Dean Facility of Agriculture of Jaffna University, Mr.A. Perinpanayagam, Agriculture Instructor of J/ Athiadi Hindu College, Neervely, Mr. R.A. Sritharan, Agriculture Instructor of J/ Kokuvil Hindu College, Kokuvil and Mr. R. Rajeswaran, Agriculture Instructor of J/ Kopay Maha Vidyalaya, Kopay for their invaluable contribution extended to the Jaffna Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office in selecting the winners of the CIMIC Home Garden Competition 2011.

Folk dances presented by students of St. Methodist College Point Pedro and students of Ramanathan College Marathanamadam added colour to the event.

Indian Bank and several firms and individuals in Jaffna joined the Headquarters SF-J to make those donations.

Vice Chancellor Jaffna University Prof. Ms. Wasantha Arasarathnam, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Piyal Wickramaratne, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe, senior officers of civil administration and education fields, a large number of students, teachers and parents were present on the occasion.
