Spirited Jaffna Students Bring National Sports Medals & Colours Home
[Updated :: 2011-10-13 17:28:31 Hours]

Sporty boys and girls of Jaffna schools who took part in National School Games with high spirit this year too have brought medals and colours to their schools.

Students of Alaveddy J / Arunodaya College, Kayts J / St. Anthony’s College, J / Manipay Ladies’ College, J / Kulamankal Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School, J / Uduppiddy American Mission College, J / Jaffna Central College, Point Pedro J / Hartley College, J / St. John’s College, J / Inuvil Hindu College and Mathagal J / St. Joseph Maha Vidyalaya who competed with their counterparts in the south have won medals and colours in games and athletic events at the National School Sports Meet.

S. Thanusha and A. Pavithra of J / Arunodaya College set two new national records in pole vault during this year’s competitions. S. Thanusha competing under 21 category cleared a height of 3.10 m breaking the 2009 national record, 2.90 m of Thushara Udayangani of Gampaha Yasodara Girls’ College.

Meanwhile, A. Pavithra of J / Arunodaya College competing under 19 category broke the former national record, 2.81 m set by S. Thanusha of the same college in 2009, clearing a height of 3.00 m. B. Lavanan under 19 of the same college also won a gold medal in the same event. J / Arunodaya College succeeded in winning three gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals in this year’s National School Athletic Meet held at Biyagama from 30th September to 3rd October.

In National School Games held at Haliela in Badulla on 9th and 10th September, Kayts J / St. Anthony’s College and J / Manipay Ladies’ College became champions in Physical Training (PT) display. The PT squad of Manipay Ladies’ College has a proud history with many victories. They had won the gold medal in 2007 and bronze medals in 2008 and 2009, according to the principal and coach Mrs. Sooriyakumari Jeyaweerasingham who thanked the Army for training her girls to win the gold medal this year.

National level achievements of Jaffna students who continue their training with inadequate facilities is a fine example to budding sports stars in the country and it is a great honour to the Jaffna peninsula.
