“We Mustn’t Allow Anybody to Disturb University Education in Jaffna” – SF-J Commander
[Updated :: 2011-10-23 12:36:43 Hours]

Several outside elements with ulterior motives to disrupt the university education in Jaffna are seen in last few weeks with plans to create unrest among the students using cats paw. This was revealed during a meeting held between University and Security authorities of Jaffna to discuss the situation prevailing in the University on Saturday (22) at Headquarters Security Force – Jaffna (SF-J).

A tensed situation and sense of insecurity had risen in the Jaffna University after a university student leader was assaulted by unidentified group a few days ago while he was on his way after attending a private affair outside the university premises.

Addressing the gathering Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe who chaired the meeting said that Headquarters SF-J is always prepared to come forward to look after the security and other needs of the people and will definitely help the Police to maintain peace and harmony.

“Students will be given adequate protection to carry on their studies uninterrupted and no anti social forces will be allowed to disturb the education of Jaffna students who suffered for many years due to absence of peace,” SF-J Commander further said.

“There is no difference between the students from the North and the South. They live together in good comradeship. Students from the south received warm welcome on their entrance to the University. Jaffna students even willingly shared their hostel rooms with them”, said Prof. Vasanthi Arsaratnam, Vice Chancellor Jaffna University.

“But some interested elements orchestrated by a few anti-governmental groups operating from outside are trying to disrupt the activities of the University and its peaceful environment depriving students of opportunity to continue with their higher education,” said the University dons present at the meeting.

Officiating DIG Jaffna SSP Luxman Wijerathne promised that investigations are in progress to net the culprits involved in the assault on university student. He expressed hopes that Police will be able to arrest them soon with cooperation of the aggrieved party.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mrs. Vasanthi Arsaratnam, Senior Student Councilor Prof. S.T.B. Rajeswaran, Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Mrs. S. Sivachandiran, Dean Faculty of Science Prof. K. Kanthaswamy, Dean Faculty of Arts Prof. Gnanakumaran, Dean Faculty of Management Prof. T. Velnampy, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Piyal Wickramarathne, Commander 511 Brigade Brig. Keerthi Costa and Civil Affairs Officer Headquarters SF-J Lieutenant Colonel Lal Nanayakkara were present on the occasion.
