Fifty One Jaffna Students Receive Scholarships from the Army

In its effort to restore the standard of education that prevailed in Jaffna in the days of yore, Security Force – Jaffna (SF-J) has initiated a variety of projects for the development of schools and betterment of Jaffna students. Constructing and renovating school buildings, distributing school items, offering scholarships to children, organizing education trip to places in the south and organizing seminars for GCE O/L and A/L candidates are among such activities.

Another such gesture of goodwill was extended by the Civil Affairs Office of the 521 Brigade at Point Pedro (PPD) to 51 students of 5 schools in the area offering scholarships in the form of financial assistance. In this scholarship project, those 51 students from PPD Hartley College, Nelliady Central College, Vadamarachchi Hindu Girls’ College, Nelliady Vikneswara College, PPD Sivaprakasam College and Nelliady Government Tamil Mixed School will get Rs. 1000/= per month until they complete their school education.

A grand ceremony to hand over the pass books with initial deposit of Rs. 1000/= at the PPD Bank of Ceylon to students was held at the Nelliady Central College on Monday (24) with participation of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe as Chief Guest. The scholarship project is sponsored by Ambesivam Foundation.

A special donation of books was handed over by the SF-J Commander to the school library during the function. It was received by the principal of the school Mr. Sethuraja. At the same time, two footballs were also donated to the sports section of the Nelliady Central College. Head Prefect of the school Abhiram received the donation form the SF-J Commander.

Students of Nelliady Central College and Vikneswara College entertained the gathering with their cultural performances. Female student Abhiseka Thahendran of Nelliady Central College delivered the vote of thanks.

Hindu and Catholic priests, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe, Commander 521 Brigade Lieutenant Colonel Tikiri Dissanayake, President Ambesivam Foundation Mr. Arulananthan Sothi, Deputy Director Planning of Zonal Education Office Mr. Nanda Kumar, Divisional Secretary Karaveddy Mr. Saththiyaseelan and a large crowd of officials, teachers and students were also present.
