SLNS (Sri Lanka Naval Ship) Wasabha deployed at the Delft island, apart from its main role of giving security to the islanders, has undertaken a humanitarian project to construct houses for destitute families living in Delft.

Under this housing project commenced on directives of the Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Ravi Wijegunarathne, construction of ten houses has already been completed and foundations for ten more have been laid.

Total number of houses that the Navy expects to build is 326 for the families with low income in the island. Sailors serving in the Northern Naval Area are contributing their labour day and night to see that project is completed soon.

Building materials are provided by the Northern Province Governor’s office under the government’s development programme for the North “Uthuru Wasanthaya” (Wdakkin Wasantham) and the value of each house amounts approximately to Rs. 500,000/= including the cost of labour provided free by the Navy.

Project is in progress with supervision of Commanding Officer Delft island Captain (ND) Chula Ranasinghe, Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander (G) Prasad Vithanage and Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Commander Wijekumara.
