A team of students of J / Velanai Central College in Kayts island last week had opportunity to visit the “Temple Trees”, the official residence of the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. They got this golden opportunity during an education tour to Colombo organized by the 17th Battalion Gemunu Watch (17 GW) serving in Kayts.

This three day education tour was organized by the Commanding Officer 17 GW Lieutenant Colonel Senaka Premawansa and his staff officers under the project of uplifting education standard of Jaffna students, a major concern in the Civil-Military Coordination programme initiated by the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

On the 29th of October, 126 students, 13 teachers and 7 parents of the J / Velanai Central College were welcomed to the “Temple Trees” where they were offered lunch and presented parcels of gifts to mark their visit to the resident of the leader of the country.

Before visiting the “Temple Trees”, Lt. Col. Premawansa took them around Colombo city to show some important places in Colombo where none of them had ever been before.

Galle Face, Colombo harbour, Dehiwala Zoo, National Museum, Viharamahadevi Children’s park, Independence Square, Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) and the Parliamentary complex were among other places they visited.

Meals and accommodation had been arranged at the Panagoda Sri Bodhirajaramaya temple.
