Bells of the Idayakkadu Pillayar Kovil chimed on Tuesday (29) after twenty one years marking the return of residents to their native lands when the Army made arrangements to release 2 sq km hitherto remained within the Palaly camp area.

On directives of Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Commander of the army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe made arrangements to de-mine the area belonging to J/283 Idaikkadu GS Division and a part of J/284 Valalai GS Division before it was released to their original owners.

A religious ceremony to hand over the lands was held on Tuesday morning at Idaikkadu Pillayar kovil premises with participation of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, Kopay Divisional Secretary Mr. M. Pratheepan, senior Army officers and a large crowd of villagers.

Troops of SF-J cleared the Temple premises and either side of the access road for the convenience of civilians hoping to settle there in future. Approximately 1085 members of 326 families are benefited by the release of the area.
