Lands Occupied by the Army Released to Their Owners

Bells of the
Idayakkadu Pillayar Kovil chimed on Tuesday (29) after twenty one
years marking the return of residents to their native lands when
the Army made arrangements to release 2 sq km hitherto remained
within the Palaly camp area.
On directives of Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Commander
of the army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander Security
Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe made
arrangements to de-mine the area belonging to J/283 Idaikkadu GS
Division and a part of J/284 Valalai GS Division before it was released
to their original owners.
A religious ceremony to hand over the lands was held on Tuesday
morning at Idaikkadu Pillayar kovil premises with participation
of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Government
Agent Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, Kopay Divisional Secretary Mr.
M. Pratheepan, senior Army officers and a large crowd of villagers.
Troops of SF-J cleared the Temple premises and either side of the
access road for the convenience of civilians hoping to settle there
in future. Approximately 1085 members of 326 families are benefited
by the release of the area.
