delegation of International Organization for Migration (IOM) officials
on a fact finding mission to Jaffna paid a courtesy call on Commander
Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe
at Palaly on Wednesday (01) morning.
Regional Director IOM for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok in Thailand
office Mr. Andrew Robert Bruce, Chief of Mission IOM Colombo office
Mr. Richard Danziger and Project Development and Donor Liaison Officer
Mr. Guiseppe Loprete got an update of the Jaffna security situation
and measures taken by the Army to enhance the living standard of
newly resettled civilians in respective areas.
The delegation was keen to learn about Crab and Aloe Vera farming
project launched by the Headquarters SF-J for ex-LTTE combatants
in coordination with the Northern Province Governor’s Office. Initiative
adopted by the Army to generate livelihood for reintegrated ex-LTTE
combatants through such projects was greatly appreciated by the
officials. Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe also explained them about Army-initiated
housing projects now in progress for low income families in the
peninsula. They were thankful to the Army for its efficiency in
completing de-miming former LTTE-held areas, fast resettlement of
IDPs and contribution towards the development programmes in Jaffna.
Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe explained the delegation about fast development
programmes augmented by the Sri Lankan government in post war Jaffna.
