For
the entertainment of civilians in 55 Division area, Headquarters
55 Division of Veththalaikerny with assistance of its three Brigades
organized New Year festivals in deferent areas with guidance of
General Officer Commanding (GOC) 55 Division Brigadier Ruwan Kulathunge.
Many sports events for children and adults such as passing eggs,
eating buns, lime and spoon race and tug-of-war were included
in the New Year festival organized by the 551 Brigade of Champianpattu
on 11th April. Commander 511 Brigade Brigadier Hemantha Kulathunge
was the Chief Guest of the festival held at Champianpattu Government
Tamil Mixed School ground.
Meanwhile,
552 Brigade commanded by Colonel W.D.G. Wanniarachchi organized
another festival at Iyakkachchi public ground on 07th April. A
large crowd took part in traditional sports and games.
At the same
time, another New Year festival was organized by the 553 Brigade
at Uduththurai Sentamil ground on 15th April. Men and women in
the area eagerly participated in the programme. Principals, Grama
Niladharis and villagers in the area were present.
Coinciding
the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, Commanding officer and all ranks
of the 20th Sri Lanka National Guard (20 SLNG) at Pallai distributed
school items among kids attending the Pallai pre-school on 04th
April. General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ruwan
Kulathunge was the Chief Guest of the ceremony held to hand over
the donations.
Mirusuvil-based
522 Brigade also organized a separate New Year festival at Kodikamam
Thirunakarasu Vidyalaya ground on 28th April with sponsorship
of “Nestomalt” (Nestle Company). GOC 52 Division Brigadier Anura
Sudhasinghe, Commander 522 Brigade Brigadier Athula Silva and
senior officers of the Brigade joined the civilians to celebrate
the cultural festival. The Brigade organized a musical evening
for the civilians at the same venue.
