avoid injuries caused to civilians by Unexploded Explosive Ordnance
(UXOs) and to give a comprehensive knowledge to teachers and school
children about the threat of UXOs, 552 Brigade has launched a Mine
Risk Education Programme for them. In its first phase, a workshop
for teachers and students in the area was organized by the Brigade
on Friday (11) at Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed (RCTM) Vidyalaya, Pulopallai.
about UXOs and precautionary measures to be followed if any suspicious
item of the similar nature was found were given by the officers
of 10 Field Engineer Regiments. Civil Affairs Office of the 552
Brigade and the 23rd Battalion the Gemunu Watch (23 GW) coordinated
the Brigade has planned to donate Tamil books to libraries of
all schools in the Brigade area with the assistance of National
Library and Documentation Services Board, Colombo. The first set
was handed over to Pulopallai RCTM Vidyalaya on the same occasion
by the Commander 552 Brigade Colonel Deepal Wanniarachchi.
Commander 23 GW Lieutenant Colonel L.G.B. Kariyawasam Civil Affairs
Officer 552 Brigade Lieutenant Colonel R.R.S. Jayasekara and officers
of 10 Field Engineer Regiment were present on the occasion.
The Brigade intends to continue with this Mine Awareness Programme
for civilians and donation of books in future too.
