Commander
Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe
urged students of the University of Jaffna to be more particular
on their higher studies and concentrate on timely competition
of studies negating various other activities that may ruin their
future as well as of the country.
This request
was made from student representatives who sat in a forum on Wednesday
(23) to discuss the present situation in the University where
one student had received injuries due to assault by a gang recently.
This situation compelled University administration to seek assistance
of the Security Forces to ensure conducive environment for students
to continue higher studies without any harassments from outside
elements.
The meeting
chaired by the SF-J Commander was held at the Civil Affairs and
Public Relations Office with participation of the Vice Chancellor,
Deans of all faculties and a section of students of the University.
Jaffna Commander stressed that the divided country- concept within
the island is only a dream, and showing allegiance directly or
indirectly to the idea of separatism would never achieve that
dream and hence all communities must foster coexistence.
“Being the
premier and responsible academic institute in the peninsula, Jaffna
University is continuing its academic affairs well and all need
to cooperate with the University administration in those endevours,”
said Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Vasanthi Arasarathnam briefed the forum
on present situation in the University. She especially mentioned
about the security threat on the life of student council leaders.
While appreciating the role of the military to establish an incident-free
environment in the peninsula, the Vice Chancellor requested the
Commander SF-J to provide adequate security for students with
coordination of the Police.
Maj. Gen.
Hathurusinghe agreed to deploy the Army and police officers near
the University and roads, where undergraduates walk to attend
lectures and practical sessions, to ensure their safety. He thanked
the Vice Chancellor for bringing the situation of the University
to his notice, which enables him to give his fullest support to
ensure smooth functioning of the University where youths are moulded
to be intellectuals and future leaders of the country.
