Committee of the Royal College Union (RCU), Colombo extending its
hands of friendship and magnanimity, donated a well-equipped library
to J / Kulamangal Roman Catholic Vidyalaya at Mallakam to improve
the education standard of students of the area. A ceremony organized
to declare open the library was held on Monday (11) at Kulamangal
R.C. Vidyalaya.
The donation
came on request of the Civil Affairs Office of the 513 Brigade
which coordinated with schools and education authorities of the
Walikamam Education Zone. Soldiers of the 14th Gemunu Watch completely
renovated an old classroom with financial provisions of the RCU
to make this library.
Building materials,
furniture, one computer and books cost the RCU over Rs. 400,000/=.
Principal of the Royal College Mr. Upali Gunasekara unveiled the
plaque to symbolically hand over the building to Kulamangal RC
Vidyalaya. Principal of J / Kulamangal RC Vidyalaya Mrs. R.J.
Anthonimuttu appreciated the gesture of goodwill shown by Old
Royalists at the meeting chaired by Commander Security Forces
- Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe as Chief Guest.
Principal
of the Royal College thanked the Commander SF-J and the Army for
making an opportunity for them to help this school which needed
a library to improve the education of its students.
During the
Chief Guest’s speech, Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe said that this generous
act of the RCU will espouse mutual understanding between the students
of the North and the South and it will help establish sustainable
peace in the country.
Security
Forces - Jaffna facilitated free transportation of the donation
from Colombo to Mallakam.

Secretary RCU Mr. Manju Ariyarathne, Walikamam Zonal Director
of Education Mr. S. Kailasanathan, Deputy Principal of Royal;
College Tamil Section Mr. S. Kanapathipillai, Commander 513 Brigade
Brigadier Pradeep De Silva, EDEX committee chairman Mr. Kamal
Abeysinghe, Senior Officers of the 51 Division, a few students
from the Royal College, teachers, students and parents of J /
Mallakam RC Vidyalaya were present on the occasion.
Last year
the Royal College donated school items, uniforms, schoolbags and
shoes worth over Rs. 800,000/= to all students of the same school.
