Soldiers Bring Ruinous Wild Fire at Manalkadu Jungle under Control

[2012-08-18 18:15:18]

Fire set by illegal logging and timber smugglers to the Manalkadu jungle on Friday (17) night has destroyed nearly 5 acres of Casuarina reserve.

Soldiers serving in Manalkadu and Kudaththanai areas attempted to extinguish the fire but strong wind and severe drought prevailing prevented them dousing the fire. The 52 Division had to mobilize about 200 extra troops for the purpose and by Saturday (18) afternoon they could control the fire by clearing line of trees, dried leaves and digging ditches around the affected area.

Felling trees in this jungle which serves as a cyclone barrier has been a common phenomenon. However, soldiers serving in the area have on many occasions caught them red handed and handed over to the Police.
