Army Releases Lands at Ramavil

[2012-12-24 09:21:14]

Sri Lanka Army officially released the lands at Ramavil where former IDP Welfare Centre stood on Friday, December 21st. This 32 acre land, owned by 45 families was earlier encroached and used by the LTTE as a terrorist base until the Army expelled the terrorists and liberated it in 1996. Later, Army established a camp there to prevent intrusion of terrorists and ensure the security in the area.

As civilians escaped the LTTE held area and made their way to government held areas during the recent Humanitarian Operation, this land was converted to a welfare centre.

However, with completion of early resettlement of IDPs in the peninsula this year the Ramavil Welfare Centre was closed down. Then the Army, using the troops of 523 Brigade took over the task of cleaning and reconstruction of the land before it was released to be handed over to owners.

Commander Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe attended the function organized in this regard at Ramavil as Chief Guest. Divisional Secretary Chavakachcheri Ms Shanthiseelan, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe and senior officers of the SF-J were present on the occasion.
