The year’s most significant Thaipongal ceremony at which the largest Pongal rice is cooked and served by the soldiers of Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) was held at Elephant Pass (EPS) on 14th of January.

Nearly 6000 people who crossed the EPS Gateway stooped there to taste the Pongal rice served by the soldiers from early morning to mid noon. A model Hindu village with families living in makeshift houses in cultivated lands had been built at the entrance highlighting Hindu traditions. A grand cultural show performed by Jaffna and Kilinochchi school children and artistes from Ambalangoda in down south had been organized for the entertainment of the crowd.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, the Chief Guest of the Monday’s function and Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe in the company of senior officers of the SF-J visited the model Hindu village and gave away gifts to the families there.

Hambanthota District Parliamentarians Hon. Namal Rajapaksa attended the celebration as the Guest of Honour.

General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe and all ranks serving under the 55 Division organized this colourful ceremony. The 55 Division organized this Thaipongal festival for the third consecutive time at the same place.
