[2013-05-14 14:53:56]

A team of soldiers of the 14th Gemunu Watch (14 GW) was immediately rushed to Gonapuram in Mallakam to assist the families affected due to the adverse weather condition that swept across the peninsula Monday (13) morning. Four houses were completely destroyed and eleven more were pertly damaged due to the cyclone and heavy rain.

Seventy four members of fifteen families of Gonapuram were affected while one 17 year old girl and two boys of 14 and 19, who were inside the houses at the time that Palmyra trees fell on the houses, were admitted to Thelippalai and Jaffna hospitals with minor injuries.

Despite the rain, soldiers commenced reconstruction of the destroyed houses in the morning. Thelipplai Divisional Secretariat and the 513 Brigade provided tin sheets and other construction materials.

Meanwhile, Army and the Police provided cooked meals for affected families.

Soldiers completed reconstruction of all five damaged houses by the following day (14) morning.
