under command to Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna renovated
a tank in Araly - Jaffna and handed it over to villagers in the
area in order to support their livelihoods. Periyakulam tank is
the largest tank in Jaffna peninsula, the tank that provides water
for agriculture, approximately 800 acres in Araliy North area.
The valuable project was initiated upon the request of Dr. Sidambaran
Mohan, the President of 'Friends of Jaffna' organization and the
Farmers' Society of Vadukkoddai - Southwest together with Government
Agent Mr. N Vethanayahan. Under the guidance of Commander Security
Forces Jaffna Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya, the General Officer
Commanding 51 Division Brigadier Lalith Rathnayake and Commanding
Officer 10 Field Regiment Sri Lanka Engineers Major Waruna Ponnamperuma
oversaw the project.
The renovation project was partly funded by the Government Agent's
Office and much needed expertise manpower and machinery were provided
by Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna. The tank was declared
open by mixing of holy water brought from the Kashi Ganga Nadi
(River Ganges in Varanasi) in India, amidst the presence of Commander
of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV
USP ndc psc on Monday 4th November 2019. The villagers and school
children took part in a programme to plant tree saplings around
the renovated tank.
Religious Dignitaries, Commander Security Forces - Jaffna, Representative
of the Consul General of India in Jaffna Mr. S Subramaniam, General
Officers Commanding (GOC) 51 and 52 Divisions, Commander Forward
Maintenance Area (North), Brigadier General Staff and Brigadier
Admin and Quartering Security Forces - Jaffna, Additional Government
Agent (Land) of Jaffna, Divisional Secretary of Walikamam West,
Chairman of Palmyra Development Board, Executive Director Global
Social Forum along with a large number of Military Personnel and
Government Officials attended the historical event.
