Investments to Boost Jaffna’s Paralyzed Industry

With view to reviewing feasibility for reopening former industrial
places which were closed down due to LTTE activities, and to study
the environment for new industrial opportunities, officials of the
Board of Investment (BOI) visited Jaffna on Saturday (17.07.2010)
The delegation comprising Chairman BOI Mr. Jayampathi Bandaranayake,
senior officials of the BOI and giants in the field of investment
working with the BOI first met Commander Security Forces-Jaffna
(SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe who presented an overall
view of the Jaffna’s situation. SF-J Commander reiterated the need
of opening up some industrial sites to increase employment opportunities
and mitigate suffering of unemployed youth in Jaffna.
The delegation inspected some abandoned industrial places in Jaffna
and assessed feasibilities to open up new factories creating a considerable
number of employments for job-seeking people in Jaffna.
They also met Hon. Minister of Traditional Industries and Small
Enterprises Development Mr. Douglas Devananda to discuss the possible
areas which could be developed as productive industries.
Attention of the BOI on Jaffna as a centre of investment will undoubtedly
be a boost to Jaffna’s economy since it will promote local production
and give solution to unemployment problem.
