[Updated :: 2010-08-05 09:10:54 Hours]

In its effort to uplift the livelihood of Jaffna community who lived with bitter experience nearly for three decades due to war, and to improve educational standard of the Jaffna younger generation, Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) recently started two new welfare projects on guidance of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

As a pre-curser to these projects, scholarships were given to ten selected poor students from two schools in Jaffna on Sunday (01.08.2010) during a function held at Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office Jaffna.

Nine students from J / Urumpirai Hindu College and one student from Jaffna St. Anthony’s College received their passbooks with Rs. 1000/- of bank deposits from the Commander SF-J Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe, the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Scholarship recipients will get Rs. 1000/- every month from donors who wish to assist them until they complete their education.

In addition, parcels of valuable school items were presented to twenty students by the SF-J Commander who urged the parents to be interested in giving education to their children, being the future of our country.

On the same occasion, a stock of backyard poultry was distributed among ten families with low income to support their living and to help eradicate the malnutrition among their children. The project of the SF-J to be extended to many areas in Jaffna soon will benefit 8000 families with low income. Each family will be given twelve hens and two fowls free.

Government Agent Jaffna Mrs. Imelda Sukumar, Mayoress Mrs. Y. Pathgunaraja, General Officer Commanding 51 Division Maj. Gen. Janaka Walgama, senior officers of the Departments of Education and Animal Products and Health, principals, teachers and parents attended the function organized by Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office Jaffna.
