Jaffna – Mannar Main Road Nears Completion
[Updated :: 2010-08-28 18:23:31 Hours]

The Sangupiddy causeway between Poonaryn (Poonakary) and Kerathivu jetty in Jaffna is nearing completion creating an alternative route Jaffna with mainland.

Engineers of the Access Engineering Company in charge of the site hope to complete the construction of the bridge over the Jaffna lagoon where a temporary ferry service functioned before the first week of October this year.

Reconstruction of the 4 km long causeway on government-steered “Uthuru Wasanthaya (Wadakkin Wasantham)” programme completes the Jaffna-Mannar (A-32) road and facilitates easy traveling between Colombo and Jaffna with lesser mileage than the A-9 road. It reduces the total distance by about 35 km from Colombo to Jaffna.

As an extension to the main project started in March 2010 by the Road Development Authority, initial surveying has been conducted to widen the road from Kerathivu to Navatkuli.

Two lands were connected with a ferry service between two protruded jetties before the LTTE blasted the famous Sangupiddy jetty paralyzing the administration machinery and good supply from the Colombo capital to Jaffna via Mannar.
