A group of students from Jaffna schools recently had a novel experience
of seeing beauty of the upcountry of their own country when the
Security Forces- Jaffna (SF-J) took them to World Heritage City
of Kandy on a three-day visit that started on 18th August.
Thirty
five students who performed well during their studies at Kulaimangal
Roman Catholic College-Mallakam, Murugarthi College-Uduvil and Memorial
College-Manippay joined the excursion which offered them a good
exposure to the world that they never had in their life before.
The
students got the golden opportunity of seeing the splendor of famous
Kandy Dalada Perahera with a distinguished audience at historical
Maha Maluwa of the ancient Royal Palace. Sacred Temple of the Tooth,
Kandy museum, Peradeniya Botanical Garden, Victoria dam and the
power house were among other places of visits that fascinated and
educated the younger crowd.
Army
also had arranged a journey by train from Kandy to Matale during
which the visitors from the north received warm welcome at stations
on their way. Students had their lunch with soldiers of the 8th
Gajaba Regiment at Matale, the destination.
Boys
were overjoyed to be spectators of the one day cricket match between
Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Dambulla international stadium on their
way back to Jaffna. Major General (Retd) Lawrence Fernando provided
free seats for them to see the match.
Students
of Dharmaraja College Kandy showed the sentiment of brotherhood
to their northern counterparts giving food and accommodation at
college hostel during stay in Kandy. Jaffna students expressed their
extreme delight over the experience they had in the beautiful Hill
Capital.
On
a concept of Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe,
the 51 Division in Jaffna organized the excursion with guidance
of General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama.
513 Brigade coordinated the tour with principals of relevant schools.
