Plantation Minister Plans to Boost Agriculture in Jaffna

Hon. Minister of Plantation Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe visited Jaffna Friday, June 11th on a special mission to explore possible ways to develop agriculture in the peninsula under the government’s northern development project “Uthuru Wasanthaya”.

Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe received the Cabinet Minister and the retinue at the Palaly airstrip on their arrival.

Mr. Samarasinghe addressing a section of senior officials in Administrative and Agriculture fields at the Jaffna District Secretariat emphasized the need of introducing other economic crops including coconut, rubber and sugarcane etc. which would bring more profit to Jaffna farmers in addition to encouraging traditional home-gardening.

Government, through this new agricultural project, expects to get the contribution of northern farmers to enhance the country’s gross product of those commodities.

Deputy Minister Mr. Salinda Dissanayake, Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Government Agent Jaffna Mr. K. Ganesh, District and Divisional Secretaries in the Northern Province attended the conference.

Minister, after the meeting with government officials, flew to Palai to get first hand knowledge on successful coconut plantations in that area.

Conclusion was made to establish a nursery at Palai to distribute quality coconut plants to the Northern Province where thousands of families will find a better livelihood when the government’s plantation project gets underway. Newly re-settled families will be among those are to be benefited. At the initial stage, three quality coconut plants will be given to each re-settled family.

Kilinochch, which was once the centre for exchange of agriculture products between the north and the south, will provide lands to grow rubber and sugarcane in mass scale. It expected that economy fallen due to terrorist activities in the area will commence to revive as the new plantation project starts.

The Minister and the entourage left Jaffna the same day evening.
