Chief Prelate of Malwatte Temple Brings Gifts to Students in Jaffna

Chief Prelate of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Siddhartha Mahanayaka Thero and a group of senior monks of the Malwatte Temple in Kandy together with leading members of the Dayaka Sabha arrived in Jaffna on Wednesday (28.07.2010) evening as the last leg of their three day itinerary relating to humanitarian assistance to poor families in the North.

The Mahanayaka and the entourage passing war affected areas in Vavuniya and Mullaittivu where they distributed donations to thousands of needy families arrived in Jaffna to extend the same assistance to innocent people in Jaffna.

During the main function held at the Nelliady Central College on Thursday (29) morning, Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero and a few more monks distributed parcels of school items among 1500 schoolchildren studying in Jaffna schools. This worthy donation worth over Rs. 2 million was organized by “Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Manava Sahayogitha Padanama”, a Kandy-based charity foundation with coordination of Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office of Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna (SF-J).

A section of students representing different schools in Jaffna Education Zones received parcels of gift from the Most Ven. Mahanayaka, a few other Buddhist monks from the Malwathu Maha Vihara and Hindu and Catholic priests.

Addressing the gathering of students, teachers, parents, senior government officers and Army personnel present at the function, Most Ven. Mahanayaka expressed his delight for being able to visit people in Jaffna and invoked blessing on those who made all arrangements for this worthy course.

The Kandy Buddhist delegation received a warm welcome according to Hindu tradition at Nelliady. Alms for monks and meals for others were provided by people in Nelliady and the Army.
A special alms giving had been arranged by the 51 Division on Thursday (29) in Jaffna town where Commander Security Forces-Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe along with senior Army officers offered “Dane” and “Atapirikara” to Most Ven. Mahanayaka Thero and other monks.

Brigadier General Staff Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna Brig. B.C.J.A.F. Rodrigo and senior officers of the headquarters SF-J and 52 Division were also present on the occasion.
