Jaffna Welcomes Peace Envoys from South with High Sentiments
[Updated :: 2010-06-15 17:15:03 Hours]

In recognition of cultural and social equality and signifying the brotherhood between Southern Sinhalese and Northern Tamils, a group of young people launched a “Sama Pada Yathra” (Peace March) from Point Dondra to Point Pedro (PPD) with blessings of Hon. Parliamentarian for Hambantota District Mr. Namal Rajapakse, founder of “Tharunnyata Hetak” youth movement.

These Messengers of peace who walked under the banner of “Giruva Patthuwen Thal Arambata” from down south across the island for 27 days received brotherly welcome extended by Jaffna people from Palai town up to PPD town on Monday (15).

The last phase of this Peace March started on 15th June from Ushan in Jaffna after observing religious rites. Dwellers gathering on roadside expressed their feeling of friendship and brotherhood by lighting crackers and waving hands throughout. Hindu religious leaders, senior Administrative officers, school children and villagers had arranged refreshments and special poojas at Kodikamam, Varani and Manthikai junctions to encourage the peace-loving youth marched up to PPD bringing the message of peace and unity.

At the end of brief but pompous welcome at PPD where each other exchanged sentiments of love and brotherhood for some time, white pigeons were freed to the air symbolizing the lasting peace.

On instructions of Commander Security Forces Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Lal Perera coordinated the “Pada Yathra” in Jaffna.

This historical Peace March with a distance of 626 km, organized for the first time after the LTTE, that terrorized the country for thirty years, was entirely defeated by armed forces with leadership of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse as the Commander in Chief, started from Tangalle in down south on 19th May.
