It was a poignant moment for all the people who gathered at the
Duraiappa Stadium to witness the ceremonial hand over of keys of
the houses built by the soldiers deployed in the Jaffna to most
needy families by the HE the President on 01 April 2010. Concurrently,
The Army Commander Lt General Jagath Jayasooriya handed over houses
in Thenamarachchi area for families.
This housing project to build houses for the most needy displaced
families was mooted by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Security
Force Commander Jaffna under the guidance of Lt General Jagath Jayasooriya,
Commander of the Army as a community development programme. A total
of 680 houses were given away to those families who were displaced
due to war. While the government made available much of the resources,
the Army contributed sand, cement and skilled workers, for this
noble project. A large number of well wishers and philanthropists
form the area too contributed by providing building material as
an appreciation of this work by the troops.
This housing project will continue in the future too and would remain
a symbol of unity among different communities.
