Jaffna City Prepared to Celebrate Vesak after Thirty Years
[Updated :: 2010-05-24 17:03:21 Hours]

On suggestion of the Late Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Luxman Kadirgamar, a renowned intellectual and pious Hindu, at the 1999 general assembly, UN declared the Vesak Full Moon Day an international holiday. But when the whole world celebrated the Birth, Attaining Enlightenment and Passing Away of Lord Buddha, rays of that freedom never fell on the northern part of the island due to terrorist domination in those areas.

Now an era has dawned for people in the north as well as the south to enjoy Vesak celebrations after thirty years.

To strengthen the linkage between major ethnic communities and to enhance rapport between Security Forces and Jaffna populace, Security Forces Headquarters-Jaffna, on guidance of Jaffna Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, has organized a religious celebration in high profile under the theme of Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai from 27th to 30th May for Jaffna civilians as well as visitors from the south during the Vesak season.

Creations depicting Jathaka stories, presentation of devotional songs (Bhakthi Gee) in Tamil language for the first time, large Dansala, giant Vesak lantern competitions and various other decorations presented by Jaffna-based troops will be on display in the “Vesak Zone” declared covering the area including Jaffna Fort, Library and Duraiappa Stadium.

At invitation of Jaffna Security Forces Commander, a galaxy of distinguished guests and senior citizens in Jaffna will be present to declare open and witness the celebrations each day.
